So it was puzzling when, ride after ride, the star of Specialized's works department hid its personality. This was not a bike that excelled at any single trait--sprinting or climbing or out-of-the-final-crit-corner bursts--at the expense of others. It hadn't put its light weight on a pedestal. Though it was stiff yet comfortable, neither its stiffness nor its resilience screamed for primacy. And it seemed neither accurate nor fair to characterize the Tarmac as one of those bikes whose sum exceeds its parts; each quality is as top-notch as the total. Then, on a horribly windblown ride--one where the headwind cracks your skull while crosswinds take you off at the knees--the Tarmac just kept flowing. "This bike," I thought, "is fast. Period." Sometimes the most obvious answer is also the most complete. From the bright-red hubs to the frame and fork's carbon layup, the Tarmac SL is a bike made, simply, to go fast. The frame and fork combine the best of what Specialized has learned from its previous aluminum road-racing Tarmacs and its carbon plush line, Roubaix: Power transfer is immediate and efficient, yet, because being comfortable and fresh are key factors in how long you can go fast, nothing about the bike punishes you, as some pure racing machines will. Weight is shaved carefully (for instance, with Shimano's Dura-Ace cassette instead of SRAM's Force cluster), and given back to achieve comfort such as with the Zertz-elastomer-embedded seatpost, a key piece in the bike's smooth feel.
